John R. Butterly, MD
John Butterly, MD, is the Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health. In this role he is responsible for facilitating the integration of clinical programs across our region. Dr. Butterly oversees the development of policies, procedures, and protocols; and develops regional educational and research opportunities in partnership with Dartmouth Medical School and DHMC leaders. Dr. Butterly is a cardiologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. Prior to this appointment he was the Executive Medical Director of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and was responsible for clinical practice.
Dr. Butterly completed his undergraduate education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he received an AB in Biology (Ecology/Marine Biology). He went on to earn a graduate degree (MA) in Biochemistry at the University of California at Berkeley followed by his MD degree at the University of California, San Francisco.
He completed his training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and practiced at the Lahey Clinic where he also served as the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization laboratory, Chairman of Medicine, and Medical Director of Network Development.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities at the Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Butterly teaches courses at the undergraduate level at Dartmouth College on "The Biology and Politics of Starvation" and "Global Health and Society".
