John Harrison is a retired lawyer who moved to Hanover from Philadelphia with his wife, Alice, in 2001. They chose to retire to the Upper Valley because of a love of New England, the reputation of DHMC as an exceptional medical facility, the attraction of Dartmouth College and the lure of children and grandchildren who live here.

Mr. Harrison graduated from Yale University in 1957 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1963. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Harrison served for three years as an officer on a destroyer in the United States Navy.

During 38 years as a practicing lawyer in Philadelphia, Mr. Harrison specialized in trusts and estates law and related litigation. He served briefly as a public defender and throughout his career included civil rights and pro bono cases in his professional life.

Mr. Harrison served for more than 30 years on many boards and commissions of both the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania and the national Episcopal Church, including service as a member of the Executive Council of the national church and a period of time as Chancellor (legal advisor) for the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. He currently chairs the board of a foundation that funds students in Episcopal seminaries.
