Dr. William Abdu

William Abdu, MD, MS is the Medical Director of The Spine Center, a member of the Clinical Practice Committee, and a member of the DHMC Board of Governors since 2009. Dr. Abdu completed his undergraduate studies in biology at Boston University and his medical degree at Tufts University in 1985. His Internship and Orthopaedic training were completed at DHMC in 1990. This was followed by a fellowship in spine surgery at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio. In 1991, Dr. Abdu returned to DHMC where he practices as a division leader and spine surgeon in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Abdu's areas of research interests include the study of the association of the burden of illness and the impact illness has on patient-reported outcomes in spine patients. He has also been active in safety and quality initiatives, resident education, Shared Decision Making (SDM), and Informatics. Dr. Abdu was one of the early proponents and a champion of the electronic and wireless methods of assessing patient reported-outcomes, now commonly referred to as H-Quest, soon to be accessed through MyChart in eD-H. He is the DHMC site principle investigator for the SPORT trial, undertaken nationally to prospectively evaluate the outcomes for non-surgical and surgical treatment of common spinal conditions. Dr. Abdu was a member of the web operations committee responsible for implementation of the quality reports web page at DHMC where, with DHMC a national leader, patient reported outcomes information about our treatment interventions are available for patients to review. As a believer in the notion that good information leads to good decisions by patients, Dr. Abdu has fully integrated the practice of SDM into all aspects of spine care at DHMC. Dr. Abdu has been integrally involved in the selection of Epic as D-H's enterprise-wide electronic health record which is necessary for the vision of achieving the healthiest population possible, and in the implementation of eD-H as a member of the Informatics committee since its' inception.

Dr. Abdu is a Trustee of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic.
