Hugh C. Smith, MD

Hugh C. Smith, MD retired as a Professor of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in June, 2011. He is past chair of Mayo Clinic Rochester's Board of Governors and past vice president of Mayo Foundation. He was previously director of the Cardiac Laboratory, chair of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, and medical director of Mayo Health Plans.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of the Manitoba Medical School, Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. He received his Internal Medicine training at the University of Manitoba, cardiovascular research training at the University of Washington, and further research and clinical cardiovascular training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
A physician leader; he has experience with a wide range of governing committees at Mayo and is one of Mayo's Board of Trustees. He is a founding board member of two state-wide organizations directed at multi-system quality and safety initiatives – Institute for Clinical Systems Integration (ICSI) and Safest in America. He has served as medical director of Mayo Medical Services, Inc. – Mayo Clinic's health plan and contracting department, and a founding member of the Mayo Health System – Mayo Clinic's regional practice system of clinics and hospitals in 64 communities in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. He has served on multiple leadership groups of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, and has pursued active research interests in clinical cardiology and clinical decision making at Mayo.
Dr. Smith is the president of the Plummer Society of the Mayo Alumni Association. He completed his terms as Director, Hormel Foods Corp., in December 2011, and is chair of the board of Home Federal Savings Bank, a regional bank in Minnesota and Iowa. He chairs the Governance and Nominating Committee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield MN board, and is a member of the executive committee of the Rochester (MN) Area Foundation board.
