Seeing a Specialist

Some health insurance policies require that you consult your primary care provider, or PCP, before your visit a specialist. Your PCP must authorize the visit. This is called a referral.

If you need to see a specialist for a health condition not treated by your PCP:

  1. Call the number on the back of your insurance card. Your insurance company will tell you if you PCP must authorize the visit to see the specialist.
  2. If you need a referral, contact your doctor's office.
  3. The office will notify you if your PCP needs to see you before he or she can authorize the referral.

Please note: A referral from your PCP does not guarantee that your health insurance company will pay for your visit with the specialist.
