If your medical condition requires the attention of a specialist, your family doctor (primary care provider, or PCP) may recommend that you see a specialist within the Dartmouth-Hitchcock system. This is known as a referral.
Since your PCP has a broad perspective on your health, he or she will share information about related conditions, tests, or health risks with the specialist. He or she will also monitor your care if you become hospitalized.
If you are in a managed care plan, you will need a written referral from your PCP for any services that he or she does not provide. It is your responsibility to obtain referrals for any non-Dartmouth-Hitchcock services you need.
Please call us to:
- Request a referral for an appointment you've already discussed with your primary care provider
- Check on the status of a referral that you have requested
- Review the referral requirements of your insurance coverage
