Free HIV testing at DHMC, D-H clinics on June 27
June 25, 2012
Lebanon, NH
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is one of 17 sites throughout New Hampshire that will offer free testing for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during National HIV Testing Day on Wednesday, June 27.
DHMC and several other Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H) sites in the Granite State are collaborating with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to provide the tests which do not involve the drawing of blood for the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV most commonly spreads through unprotected sex, sharing of needles among infected people, and transmission from infected mothers to their babies. Results of the tests are available within 20 minutes.
Clinicians and researchers have made many strides in the fight against HIV - once considered a death sentence - since the identification of the virus and the confirmation of the epidemic in the early 1980s. While patients can live for years with the proper medication of what is now a chronic illness, they first must know their HIV status, which is where the testing comes in.
"It is estimated that one in five people infected with HIV in the United States don't know it," says Dr. José Montero, Director of Public Health at DHHS. "It is now recommended that everyone ages 13 to 64 be tested at least once as part of their routine health care."
