Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology

Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology provides consultations on inpatient and ambulatory patients with any drug-related problem including:

  • Adverse effects
  • Drug interactions
  • Drug allergy
  • Medication use in elderly patients
  • Optimal use of therapeutic monitoring
  • Use in patients with liver or kidney disease

We also see many ambulatory patients with possible exposures to various common chemical toxins. We are responsible for:

  • Admitting patients with serious drug overdoses or chemical poisonings
  • Providing consultative services on such patients admitted to other services as requested

We are also involved in a variety of experimental protocols for evaluating new types of medications, especially antineoplastic agents.

  • Emergency transfers of patients with life-threatening acute toxicological emergencies
  • Emergency tests for plasma levels of drugs and toxins
