A mammogram is a very safe procedure that uses low doses of radiation to detect changes in the breast that may be too small or subtle to be felt during breast self-exams. The American Cancer Society recommends that women have a baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, and receive annual mammograms beginning the age of 40.
