On Being a Dad

On Being a Dad

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.

Mark Twain, 1874

Do dads really get short shrift on Father’s Day? As one dad put it, “On their day, moms get the heart-shaped necklaces and spa gift certificates, while dads get stuck behind the grill.” Still, even though we make a much bigger deal out of Mother’s Day, most dads say they’re okay with it.

Short shrift or not, fathers have a profound influence on their children’s lives. As we celebrate Father’s Day this week, we asked a few colleagues to share their thoughts on being a dad.

Happy Father’s Day!
