If you are arrested:

  • Law enforcement officials have a right to ask you to identify yourself or to question you briefly without arresting you.
  • Your attitude and cooperation will have a direct effect on how you are treated.
  • You should give the police your name, address, phone number and date of birth. Beyond this, you do not have to volunteer anything.
  • You do not have to answer questions without your parent(s) or guardian present and without advice from a lawyer.
  • You have the right to a lawyer—everyone is allowed to speak to a lawyer. If you cannot afford one, the court will appoint one for you. Ask the police to call your parents or other adult friend.
