Nicholas M. Greene Professor and Chair
Department of Anesthesiology, Yale School of Medicine
Roberta L. Hines, MD, is the Nicholas M. Greene Professor of Anesthesiology at the Yale Medical School and Chief of Anesthesiology at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Hines earned her bachelor of arts from the University of New Hampshire and her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School (now known as the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth). She completed her anesthesia residency at Yale New Haven Hospital followed by a year as a cardiovascular fellow. She has been an attending physician at Yale New Haven Hospital since 1984 and has served as Director of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Director of the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and as Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. Dr. Hines has served on a variety of institution-wide committees at Yale New Haven Hospital including: The Institutional Peer and Quality Review Board, the Medical Executive Committee, the Surgical Service Executive Leadership Committee and the Systems Quality Committee.
Dr. Hines joined the faculty at the Yale School of Medicine as an Instructor in 1982 and rose to the rank of full Professorship in 1995, when she was also named Chair/Chief of Anesthesiology, having held that post in an acting capacity the previous year. In her role as Chair of Anesthesiology at Yale School of Medicine, she serves on several University and School of Medicine committees including: Chair of the Governance Committee of Yale Medicine, Vice Chair of the Yale Medical Group, the Medical School Executive Promotions Committee, the Provost Committee on Conflict of Interest, and The Executive Committee on the Status of Women in Medicine.
As Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Hines has expanded both the scope and depth of the clinical practice. At the current time, the department’s ten divisions provide care to over 70,000 patients annually. The department is recognized for its excellence in promoting interdisciplinary care models, developing procedural services and providing quality patient care beyond the traditional operating room environment. The department has become a nationally recognized leader in designing approaches that optimize patient care while increasing patient satisfaction.
As Chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Hines has helped create an innovative curriculum for medical students, residents and fellows. This curriculum incorporates academic programs and research opportunities early into the post-graduate training and provides inter-disciplinary avenues for research. The department offers a National Institutes of Health sponsored T-32 post graduate training for anesthesiology fellows, one of only 12 programs in the country to do so. Under her leadership, the department has expanded this research prominence, now rating tenth in the National Institutes of Health rankings.
The author of over 200 publications, Dr. Hines co-edited the three-volume "Annals of Anesthesia Pharmacology" and two volumes of "Monitoring in Anesthesia and Critical Care." She is senior editor of the ten volume "Requisites in Anesthesiology." She serves as Co-editor of Anesthesia and Co-Existing Disease, now in its eighth edition. She is a founding editor of the Anesthesia Section of the "Up to Date" educational series.
Her own research and clinical practice have focused on critical care medicine, and cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. Dr. Hines’ work as a clinician earned her recognition as one of the "Best Doctors in America" and "Best Doctors in Northeast United States." Currently, her academic interests are focused on developing care delivery models in the era of value-based health care.
Much in demand as a speaker, Dr. Hines has given over 250 presentations nationally and internationally and has held over 60 visiting professorships. Her professional affiliations include election to the Academy of Anesthesiology and the Association of University Anesthesiologists. She has served as President of the Society of Academic Anesthesiologists, as well as President of the Association of University Anesthesiologists.
