Matter of Life and Verse: Writing Poetry

Poetry allows us to experiment artfully with the matter of life. This class explores our fears and dreams, loves and losses, and every mundane thing in between, so as to give the experience of the lives we’re living a better resonance, a heightened urgency and a timeless quality. Participants will write, read and discuss poems in class.

Here are some comments from previous participants:

Excellent course — and not easy to teach such a range of writers. I would definitely take this class again!

The instructor teaches poetry without going overboard — he leaves lots of time for participants to share and listen.

The instructor gave excellent feedback and encouraged the group to comment and dialogue about each person's work.

I've started to attend more poetry readings so I invite others — or meet new people there. It has reminded me of the value of poetry, so I'm reading it a bit more. Perhaps most importantly, I am writing poetry more than I ever have — which is not to say a lot, but that was never my goal. It's uplifting to find beauty, solace, joy or any kind of expression in writing.

I will continue writing poetry as a way to connect with other people and have an outlet to express myself.

The instructor was knowledgeable, supportive and fun. He made the atmosphere comfortable for all of us to share and learn.
