All candidates for bariatric surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center must include a record of this evaluation in their registration packet. The evaluation must be completed after a minimum of two visits, and done no more than six months before you are evaluated for surgery (Step Eight).
Why do I need a psychological evaluation?
The evaluation is not intended to prevent you from having bariatric surgery. It is to identify ways to help you succeed after your surgery. Ongoing counseling is recommended for patients, especially in the early post-operative period, which is often stressful. During this time, there is little freedom of dietary choice, and the option of using food to handle stress is no longer available.
How do I find a mental health professional?
Check with your insurer for names of mental health professionals who are part of your insurance network for covered services.
