Low Fiber and Clear Liquid Diets

To prepare for your colonoscopy, you should eat a low fiber diet starting two days before your procedure. Starting the day before your procedure, you should be on a clear liquid diet.

Low fiber diet

A low fiber diet includes foods that are easy to digest and do not leave residue in your colon while you are preparing for your colonoscopy.

Low fiber foods include:

  • Bread - enriched white bread
  • Cereal with no more than one gram of dietary fiber per serving
  • Condiments - plain yellow non-grainy mustard, mayonnaise, or ketchup
  • Fruit - canned without skins, seeds, or membranes (for example, canned peaches, pears, or fruit cocktail are okay)
  • Eggs
  • Fats - small amounts of margarine, butter, or oil for cooking
  • Juices without pulp
  • Meat - well-cooked turkey, chicken, or fish
  • Pasta - plain white enriched pasta or noodles
  • Rice - white rice
  • Soup - canned without corn or peas (for example, chicken noodle and tomato soup are okay)

Do not use:

  • Brown or wild rice
  • Dried beans, baked beans, peas, or corn
  • Flax or any food products containing flax, nuts, or seeds
  • Whole wheat, whole grain, oats, or multigrain bread and other products
  • Popcorn or any snack food containing corn, nuts, or seeds
  • Raw or dried fruits and vegetables

Clear liquid diet

Please avoid any liquids that are dark red or purple, such as in juices, Jell-O, or popsicles.

Clear liquids include:

  • Broth or bouillon
  • Coffee or tea with sugar or artificial sweetener but NO dairy (milk, cream, or non-dairy creamers)
  • Fat free chicken or beef broth or bouillon
  • Ginger ale
  • Jello (gelatin) – any flavor except red
  • Juice that you can see through (for example, apple, cranberry, or white grape)
  • Popsicles, ice pops without fruit, or Italian ice (not sherbet)
  • Powdered clear "juice" mixes such as Kool-aid or Crystal Light
  • Soda
  • Sports drinks without red dye
  • Sprite
  • Water

Do not eat:

  • Dairy products (buttter, milk, cream, non-dairy creamers, half and half, etc.)
  • Fruits
  • Seeds or nuts
  • Soups such as chicken noodle soups or other soups that contain vegetables, noodles or pasta or tomato. Broths must be clear and "see-through" without particles.
  • Juices that contain pulp (for example, orange, grapefruit, tomato, pineapple, or apricot)
  • Meat
  • Vegetables
