You should not have visitors in your home
Restrict movement in your home
For those in self-isolation, stay in a single room if possible, away from other people and animals. It is also best if you have your own bathroom. If you need to leave your room, limit the amount of time you are in common areas and wear a mask.
If you have to share a space in the home, make sure there is good airflow by opening a window and turning on a fan to increase air circulation. You should always wear a mask when around others. Caregivers should also wear a mask before entering the room of someone who is sick.
Everyone should stay at least 6 feet away from each other.
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Hand sanitizer (that contains at least 60% alcohol) or disinfecting wipes are other options. Avoid touching your face.
Clean surfaces
Wipe down counters, door and cabinet knobs, and other common places you and your family touch frequently.
- First, wipe them down with household cleaners or soap and water.
- Then use a disinfecting cleaner or wipe.
If a caregiver is cleaning a sick person’s bedroom or bathroom, they should only do so on an as-needed basis. They should wear a mask and disposable gloves before cleaning. Be sure to wash your hands after you take off your gloves.
Be safe with food and water
Make sure anyone in self-isolation is eating healthy meals and drinking water throughout the day. This will keep their immune system strong.
Leave food outside of the door of anyone in self-isolation and make sure each person only touches their side of the door to help you limit exposure.
Use gloves before handling any dishes, cups/glasses, or silverware used by the person who is sick. Wash them with soap and hot water or in a dishwasher. Always clean your hands after taking off gloves.
Do not share
Do not share with the person who is sick. This includes:
- Bedding
- Cups
- Dishes
- Electronics (including a cell phone)
- Glasses
- Silverware
- Towels
It is OK to wash dirty laundry from a person who is sick with other people’s items
Always use gloves before handling dirty laundry of someone who is sick. Wash your hands after taking off gloves and also after putting clothes in the dryer.
Use a garbage bag in trash cans
When removing trash use gloves and wash your hands after removing. It is best to dedicate a lined trash can for the person who is sick.
