Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Nebulizer

Cleaning your nebulizer

  • Wash your hands with antibacterial soap before cleaning your nebulizer
  • Remove any dried and caked secretions from your nebulizer
  • After each use, rinse your nebulizer with sterile water. Tap water should not be used because of the presence of the pathogen, pseudomonas. 
  • Place the pieces of your nebulizer on a paper towel to air dry. Place another paper towel on top of the pieces.

Disinfecting your nebulizer

Your nebulizer should be disinfected every other day

  • Wash your hands with antibacterial soap before cleaning your nebulizer
  • Boil your nebulizer in boiling water for 5 minutes
  • Let cool
  • Place the pieces of your nebulizer on a paper towel to air dry. Place another paper towel on top of the pieces.

Changing your nebulizer

  • The PARI nebulizer (used for TOBI and/or Pulmozyme) needs to be changed every 6 months
  • The SIDESTREAM (used for Pulmozyme) needs to be changed every year
