Ictal SPECT Scan

The SPECT (single photon emissions computer tomography) scan is a specialty of Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Epilepsy Center.

Often those with epilepsy have seizures because certain areas of the brain experience changes in blood flow. The doctor measures blood flow to the brain by injecting a radioactive dye into the vein and then scanning the brain with a special machine.

A SPECT scan is extremely useful if the patient is injected with the dye at the beginning of a seizure.
