Fibroscan is a safe simple non-invasive way to find out the amount of  liver fibrosis (scarring of the liver) instead of a liver biopsy. It can be used with many liver diseases including Hepatitis C and B, autoimmune liver diseases and fatty liver disease. It can also be used to follow liver fibrosis long term.

A liver biopsy is an invasive procedure with risk of complications; this procedure requires placement of an IV, can be painful, and requires observation in a monitored setting for 3-4 hours after the biopsy and rest at home for the remainder of the day.  Results from the liver biopsy may take up to 10 days to become available.

The FibroScan 502 Touch is an ultrasound machine that sends sounds waves through the liver and measures the liver stiffness (transient elastography). The stiffness of the liver is associated with how much scarring there is. This tests takes only 10-15 minutes in the outpatient clinic and the results are available immediately. This allows us to make a treatment plan right away without having to schedule a biopsy, wait for the results and have to return for another appointment.
