Spine & Pain Management

The Headache and Pain Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is coordinated through the Section of Neurosurgery, the Neurology Headache Clinic, the Pain Clinic and the Spine Center.

There are multiple research projects underway for the treatment of chronic pain and headache through this network of specialists.

Dr. Nathan Simmons and Dr. Perry Ball specialize in the treatment of patients with Chiari malformations and chronic cervical and lumbar pain. They work closely with the Pain Clinic and the Spine Center in the management and treatment of patients with chronic back pain and other complex pain syndromes. Spinal cord stimulators and analgesic pumps are placed for patients with intractable pain after all management options have been explored.

A study is currently underway with the Cardiology Department, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Section, the Pain Clinic and the Neurosurgery Section examining the efficacy of spinal cord stimulators for patients with intractable angina.

Patients with trigeminal neuralgia have many treatment options available at DHMC including glycerol injection, percutaneous rhizotomies, or microvascular decompression.
