Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD) integrate its Obstetrical service with DHMC?

Integration of the APD obstetrical services has been one of the key clinical goals of the affiliation between Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD), which took place in March 2016. Since then, APD and Dartmouth-Hitchcock have been working closely to identify how best to integrate these services to ensure continued access to high quality, personalized, cost-effective care for residents of the Upper Valley. APD, like many other small hospitals across the nation, has faced significant financial and staffing challenges in connection with operating a 24/7 obstetrical service. Because APD and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center are only four miles apart, it makes practical sense to combine this service

Will the birth experience be the same on the DHMC Birthing Pavilion as it was on the APD Birthing Center for low-risk, low-intervention patients?

DHMC has a midwifery service that has provided a low-intervention birthing experience to medically appropriate patients for many years. Our integrated obstetrics service will continue to focus on delivering personalized care to our patients.

Are the providers from APD part of this integrated obstetrical service?

All of the midwives and one of the obstetricians are becoming part of the integrated obstetrical service. You can learn more about all the providers associated with the obstetrical service at DHMC by reviewing the lists of obstetric teams.

Can I get my care at both the APD and DHMC clinics?

All Obstetrical patients are strongly encouraged to conduct all clinical and centering visits at one consistent location (either APD or DHMC).

Where can I Iearn more about the birthing experience at DHMC?

Patients interested in establishing care should call the Obstetrics, Gynecology & Nurse Midwifery Clinic at DHMC for all matters (including scheduling): (603) 653-9303. Prospective obstetrical patients may tour the DHMC Birthing Pavilion. Please call (603) 653-9303 to learn about the tour schedule.

Take a virtual tour of the D-H Birthing Pavilion to learn more about your experience.

From whom will I get a bill if I get my pre-natal and post-natal care at APD?

All billing will be administered by Dartmouth-Hitchcock as of July 15, 2018 and all bills will be received from Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

Will new obstetrical patients be APD patients or DHMC patients after July 14th?

No matter the location they choose for their clinical care, patients will be considered patients of the Obstetrics, Gynecology & Nurse Midwifery Service at DHMC.

How will after-hours coverage work for the integrated service?

As a single integrated service, all providers in the integrated program will participate in on-call rotation for after-hours and weekends. They will have full access to the electronic medical record of each patient.
