Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Auto Transplantation (TPIAT)
Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Auto Transplantation (TPIAT) is a complex surgery that can help patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). CP is a lifelong condition of the pancreas that often produces chronic and unrelenting pain for patients. Patients with CP also have an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Treatments for this chronic condition can range from medications to surgery. These options aim to control pain and improve quality of life. Often they are effective for only a limited amount of time. When these treatments are no longer effective, removing the pancreas, can greatly reduce pain. A side effect of removing the pancreas can be difficult to control diabetes. Having the TPIAT procedure can help prevent diabetes.
Multidisciplinary Pancreas Tumor Clinic
Pancreatic cancer is a complex disease requiring care from many providers. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed when the disease is already advanced. The Multidisciplinary Pancreas Tumor Clinic offers treatment options in as little as one week from diagnosis. The clinic allows you to see several experts in one location during one visit. Prior to the clinic, we review each persons case during a board review meeting.
We discuss the best treatment options for managing your care. Afterward, you meet with all the providers involved in your care to discuss treatment plans and plan the first steps. Clinic specialists you may see include:
- Medical oncologists
- Oncologist dietitians
- Palliative care specialists
- Radiation oncologists
- Surgical oncologists
A dedicated pancreatic nurse coordinator helps you through this clinic and acts as a liaison for your care after the clinic as well. For more information, please refer to the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program on the Norris Cotton Cancer Center website.
