Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a 4-5 hour comprehensive assessment performed by an occupational therapist, which is used to answer questions related to employment planning or returning to a specific job. The FCE is tailored to each individual and consists of an intake interview, musculoskeletal screening, physical ability testing, and work simulation if appropriate. Safety, reliability, and validity are key components to this assessment.

A cognitive FCE is a 5-6 hour patient-tailored assessment used to answer the same type of questions as a general FCE but for patients with cognitive deficits. It contains some of the same physical testing options as in an FCE but also includes standardized cognitive assessment, non-standardized assessment, and simulation activity to promote the observation of cognitive, physical, behavioral, and psychosocial function.
