Using Brain Wave Monitoring to Predict Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction

Principal Investigator

Summary

Many older adults over 60 years of age experience cognitive problems after undergoing surgery with general anesthesia, which can last for weeks, months and possibly longer. This type of cognitive problem is known as postoperative cognitive dysfunction (or POCD). Unfortunately, no effective treatment is available to either decrease the risk of developing POCD or reduce its duration once established. We know that older adults are more susceptible to effects of general anesthesia and are more likely to receive excessive doses of anesthesia. We are studying whether brain wave monitoring during surgery can reduce the risk of developing POCD.
