About Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC)
Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is located in Lebanon, New Hampshire. DHMC is the regional academic medical center where faculty and trainees of Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth provide direct care to patients from throughout New England.
DHMC is also considered the academic home of the internship program, and serves at the educational hub for the program. Interns complete their didactic training elements at DHMC as well.
Adolescent Medical Psychiatry (AMP) Unit at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center

The Adolescent Medical Psychiatry (AMP) Unit is Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center’s inpatient unit for adolescents. It is a six-bed unit serving adolescents aged 12-17 from New Hampshire and surrounding states, including Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The AMP Unit is unique in both size and specialty as it is the only inpatient unit in the area that can admit adolescents with medical complexities, including chronic illnesses, physical limitations, and neurological conditions.
The AMP Unit provides a multidisciplinary service due to having providers across a variety of disciplines, including psychiatry, psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, and social work. The adolescents participate in a rigorous, evidence-based, and social-emotional learning (SEL) academic curriculum that meets the Common Core standards. The adolescents also engage in several therapy groups, with primary modalities including DBT, CBT, MI, and ACT.
Trainees working on the AMP Unit gain competence in working in a fast-paced, high-acuity adolescent inpatient setting with multidisciplinary providers; strengthening clinical skills in running group therapy, carrying an individual therapy caseload, and providing family therapy, including facilitation of program discharge sessions as appropriate; and engaging with a psychosocially diverse population of families and adolescents. Because the AMP Unit works with families from several states, adolescents are frequently presenting from resource-scarce areas, leading to opportunities to manage complex psychosocial backgrounds.
Trainees will leave the AMP Unit with enhanced competence in inpatient group, individual, and family therapy, as well as curriculum development, as they develop their own group content attuned to patient needs.
DHMC Outpatient Adult Neuropsychology Services

The Adult Neuropsychology Service at DHMC primarily serves an outpatient population, with occasional medical inpatient consultations. Referrals come from a wide variety of sources such as Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Genetics, and Internal Medicine, as well as other medical sections at DHMC. Referrals also come from sources in the regional communities including health care providers and community mental health centers. Interns also provide brief, flexible cognitive assessment in the Cognition in Older Adults (COA) Clinic and Huntington’s disease (HD) Clinic, attend patient interviews with the physicians, and provide feedback to the multidisciplinary team.
DHMC Outpatient Pediatric Neuropsychology Services

The Pediatric Neuropsychology Service at DHMC primarily serves an outpatient population, with occasional medical inpatient consultations. Referrals come from a wide variety of sources such as Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Genetics, Hematology/Oncology, and Internal Medicine, as well as other medical sections at DHMC. Referrals also come from sources in the regional communities including school systems, health care providers, and community mental health centers. Patients are referred for evaluation of problems related to cognition, learning, and performance, secondary to underlying conditions such as epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, genetic syndromes, childhood cancer and brain tumor, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Embedded Psychiatry Services

The Department of Psychiatry also has integrated services into specialty medicine settings. Interns can gain experience working in gastroenterology, oncology and/or obesity medicine. Faculty and trainees in the embedded space provide a range of services from brief disease-specific psychotherapy, to pre-procedure evaluations and are active members of multidisciplinary teams. Opportunities to participate in program development and evaluation are also available.
Hanover Psychiatry

Hanover Psychiatry, located in Hanover, New Hampshire, is a community-based psychiatric and psychological practice offering evidence-based treatment and evaluation, and is a division of the Department of Psychiatry. The practice frequently provides services to Dartmouth College students and faculty, as well as members of the surrounding communities.
All clinicians practicing and supervising at Hanover Psychiatry are faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, resulting in a team of highly skilled professionals who remain abreast of best practices in mental health services.
In addition to offering clinical services, Hanover Psychiatry staff clinicians are also involved in research projects, teaching and supervising junior faculty, residents, and interns. Treatment approaches utilized at Hanover Psychiatry include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), mindfulness-based interventions, trauma-focused interventions including prolonged exposure and cognitive processing therapy, relapse prevention, parenting skills building, and psychopharmacology.
The Adult Psychology track interns spend up to two days per week at Hanover Psychiatry.

New Hampshire Hospital (NHH) Neuropsychology Consultation Service

New Hampshire Hospital (NHH) is the state's primary psychiatric inpatient facility, and is a teaching hospital staffed by DHMC Department of Psychiatry faculty. As such, it represents a unique example of public sector-academic liaison.
The Neuropsychology Consultation Service is housed in the Acute Psychiatric Services facility. Neuropsychological consultation is provided for patients from admissions and longer-term units, including Adult Psychiatry and Geriatric units. NHH is located in Concord, New Hampshire.
NHH provides acute stay services, neuropsychiatry services, and transitional housing services to children, youth, adult, and geriatric populations. NHH treats approximately 2,000 admissions annually. The Adult Neuropsychology track interns conduct diagnostic and neuropsychological evaluations of a predominantly severe and persistent mental illness population and interprofessional collaboration within a multidisciplinary team consultation model. The interns also collaborate with first- and second-year post-doctoral fellows specializing in neuropsychology.
Outpatient Psychiatry Clinics at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center

The Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic at DHMC is maintained by the Department of Psychiatry to provide child and adult services and manage the hospital's psychiatric inpatient and partial hospitalization units. Psychiatric emergency services are provided through the hospital's emergency department. Approximately 10,000 patients per year receive some type of service from one of the Department's units at DHMC. Approximately 4,000 adults and 1,300 children receive outpatient medication management and psychotherapy per year.
Child and Pediatric Psychology track interns spend a substantial proportion of their training year providing services to the DHMC population.
Pediatric Primary Care

The DHMC Pediatric Primary Care clinic is a medical setting in which the Child and Pediatric Psychology track intern delivers care to children and adolescents in a collaborative manner with physicians and other allied health professionals for a range of emotional and behavioral health needs. Interns work alongside the supervising psychologist to provide brief interventions and consultations for these patients.
