Adult Trauma Program

The Trauma Program at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center provides comprehensive care for patients with serious and life-threatening injuries. When patients arrive through the Emergency Department, our trauma team is available to provide rapid assessment, stabilization, and definitive treatment.

As the only American College of Surgeons verified Adult Level I Trauma Center in New Hampshire, our program provides the highest level of trauma care available, 24 hours a day. Level I Trauma Centers are equipped to care for the most complex injuries and must maintain immediate access to trauma surgeons and specialized surgical teams, advanced critical care resources, and comprehensive rehabilitation services. In addition to providing clinical care, Level I centers are leaders in trauma education, research, and injury prevention.

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center serves as the tertiary referral center for Northern New England, receiving patients from hospitals and emergency medical services across New Hampshire, Vermont, and surrounding regions. Our trauma team works closely with regional hospitals to ensure patients with severe injuries are rapidly transferred to a center with the appropriate resources.

For patients requiring transport from the field or interfacility transfer, we partner with DHART (Dartmouth Hitchcock Advanced Response Team), which provides both air and ground critical care transport throughout Northern New England.

Our multidisciplinary trauma team includes trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, and many other professionals dedicated to delivering coordinated, evidence-based care from the moment of injury through recovery.
