Lisa Sackett, PhD: My HOBSCOTCH journey

Lisa Sackett, PhD

I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people build practical and simple memory skills that are useful in everyday life.

Lisa Sackett, MD, Cognitive Coach

As a clinical psychologist I help care for people in many ways, including helping people examine and change behavior to lead the best life possible. HOBSCOTCH is a behavioral program and through my work as a certified HOBSCOTCH Cognitive Coach, I provide one-on-one self-management and cognitive skills training using problem solving therapy, self-awareness training, memory training, and mindfulness.

Often, when people begin HOBSCOTCH, they have questions. Is this program effective? Can this program help my particular memory problems? Does it take a lot of time out of my busy schedule? Will my Coach be patient as I learn new ways to manage my memory problems?

These are all great questions. Happily, I can provide reassuring answers. Yes, the program is scientifically researched so we know it is effective. Yes, we can customize the program so it addresses your particular memory problems. Yes, busy people can enroll in HOBSCOTCH as long as they can set aside a little time each week. Yes, HOBSCOTCH coaches learn what will help you because you will tell your coach about your weekly successes and struggles, and together you will find the strategies that work best for you. Coaches are kind and patient, and can help you improve your memory and attention, step by step.

As a HOBSCOTCH Coach, I understand well how epilepsy and cognitive challenges affect each person differently. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people build practical and simple memory skills that are useful in everyday life. Hearing from participants that these skills last long after the program is completed makes Coaching even more rewarding. And it's often a fun process to get to solutions! For anyone living with epilepsy who is ready to tackle their individual cognitive challenges, consider giving HOBSCOTCH a try. To my fellow psychology colleagues who care for people with epilepsy, I would encourage HOBSCOTCH Coach training, and bringing this evidence-based program to your practice.
