What is inflammatory bowel disease?

Inflammatory bowel disease is a name for disorders of the intestine, including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and indeterminate colitis. In these disorders, the lining of the intestine becomes swollen and irritated and is easily damaged. The main symptoms include diarrhea (both with or without blood) and abdominal cramping. These symptoms may evolve slowly over several weeks, or they may begin suddenly.

Tests and procedures

At your first visit, you may have a physical exam which could include an examination of the lower part of the colon, rectum, and anus using a small scope. In addition, your doctor may want to get more information through blood tests, ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. We understand that some procedures and tests required for diagnosis are uncomfortable. We will do our best to ensure your comfort during the process.

Treatment and recovery

Depending on your condition, your treatment could include medication, changes to your diet, surgery, or some combination of these. In many cases, surgery involves removing the diseased part of the bowel and rejoining the two ends of the healthy bowel together.

Surgical recovery time will depend on the type of surgery you have and whether you are also undergoing medical treatments. We will make sure you have the resources and information you need to return to health as quickly as possible.
